Champion one Australian farming family in their quest to buy the World a little time in the battle against Global Warming by adopting one square metre of their farm for one year.
Your contribution of $30 (Aus) will help Hazelcombe Farm convert to Carbon Farming, which will allow our soils to start sequestering carbon at a truly remarkable rate.*
If the soil carbon is increased by a mere 1% in the top 30 cm of soil, Hazelcombe Farm, a small farm of only 50 hectares, will alone be able to sequester 6,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the amount the average Australian would emit in 236 years! According to Dr. Christine Jones, who is an internationally renowned and highly respected groundcover and soils ecologist, “it would require only a 1% increase in soil carbon on 15 million hectares of land to sequester 8 giga tonnes of carbon dioxide in the soil, which is equivalent to the greenhouse emissions for the entire planet”.
Our soils were rich in carbon, life’s treasures flourished there
Then soil health we neglected: earth’s carbon moved to air
Everywhere climates are changing
The future’s becoming unclear
Warming us slowly with carbon
There is no time now to bargain.
(Dr Christine Jones)
Christine, I’m not sure this is the best poetry I have ever heard, but I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly!

*How fast we can’t tell you. It depends on soil type, climate, weather conditions etc. However, we do know that Dr. Christine Jones states in her paper “Creating New Topsoil” that several centimetres of top soil can form in a single year.
